I grew up in a big family of 7 with my Dad playing guitar but I was more interested in art and dance. I started off playing flute in primary school but when I heard this song in a movie I immediately wanted to learn how to play it on the guitar.
My Dad showed me the start of it and told me how to read tab and I was off, learning the piece for my NCEA exams! I heard about EXCEL School of Performing Arts when they came and performed at my school and I found that I could study a Certificate of Performance in Music, majoring in Guitar but I could also take Dance as a minor.
So here I am, halfway through my course at Excel doing the two things I love best.
I’ve found the one-on-one lessons twice a week with my guitar tutor have meant that a whole new world of chords and improvising has opened up for me. I’m also in a band and playing all sorts of different styles.
I really love Song Writing because it lets me explore my creative side and then the tricks to get it down onto paper!
EXCEL has given me new friends from around New Zealand and the support we give each other is something special. I know I want to make a difference and I’m going to use my music.
